Drug Treatment Center Considerations

There are many things to consider when evaluating residential drug programs.  Finding the right treatment program involves careful consideration of things such as the setting, length of care and the philosophical approach to drug treatment as well as you and your loved one’s needs.

  • Does the drug treatment center accept your insurance?  If not, will they work with you on a payment plan or help you to find another means of support?
  • Is the drug treatment center licensed and accredited?
  • Is the drug treatment center run by licensed, professional, well-trained staff?
  • Does the drug treatment center encompass the full range of you or your loved one’s needs?  Do they offer medical, psychological, social and vocational support?
  • Do they offer age, gender and culturally appropriate services?
  • Is long-term aftercare support and guidance encouraged and provided?
  • Does the drug treatment center conduct an ongoing assessment of the individual’s treatment plan?
  • Does the treatment program employ effective strategies to engage and keep individuals in longer-term treatment?
  • Does the drug treatment center offer addiction counseling and other behavioral therapies to enhance the patient’s ability to function in the family/community?
  • Does the drug treatment center offer medication as part of the treatment regimen?
  • Does the center offer ongoing monitoring of possible relapse?
  • Are services offered to family members to ensure that they understand addiction and the recovery process?
  • What types of treatment methods are available?

There are several types of drug abuse and alcoholism residential treatment programs.  Short-term methods last as little as 28 days and may include residential therapy, medication therapy and drug-free outpatient therapy.  Long term residential treatment typically lasts at least three months and can range up to one year.

Outpatient drug-free treatment does not include medication treatment and usually encompasses a wide variety of programs for patients who visit a clinic at regular intervals.  Most of the drug rehabs programs involve individual or group counseling as part of their residential therapy.  Patients entering these types of programs are drug abusers for whom maintenance therapy is not recommended, such as those who have stable, well-integrated lives and only brief histories of drug dependence.
